Why Make String Bracelets During Social-Distancing?

If we had all the time in the world, what would we do?

We have all heard people say, and maybe even said ourselves: "If I had more time, I'd do that". Now we have all the time in the world, more time than we know what to do with. When I was thinking about how I should spend most of my time now that my lacrosse season had been cut short, I struggled to find the right answer. Baking is fun, but there is only so much I can make before the refrigerator is full and we have no more ingredients. Reading right now is too much like school, so I'll pick that up in the summer. And I have three dogs, so training dogs is less of a hobby and more of a chore.

Finally, I decided to think back to the times in my life where I have made the most of my time, and I instantly thought of camp. At camp, isolated from the outside world and the internet, we often would make string bracelets to pass the time. It was easy, we would cut the string and tie it together around our water bottles so it would be with us wherever we went. Not only was it something to do while waiting for the next activity to start, but it brought us closer to each other.

How is that? How can string bracelet be a bonding activity? Well, string bracelets are not the only name for this craft, which is also know as friendship bracelets. The community that you can create by creating bracelets for those around you, teaching each other new patterns, and wearing all the different bracelets on your wrists is incomparable to any other. So when I realized that, it made perfect sense to start making them again during this time. Not only would I now have something to do, but I could connect myself to the friends and family that I could not be with in person right now.

I also realized that teaching bracelet making could be a way to help others find deeper connections to their families as we all struggle to cope with the new changes. So if you are looking for something fun to do, or perhaps a birthday is coming up and you want to give something a little different this year, I can help. Whether you want to learn a simple stitch that takes 10 minutes or an intricate pattern, I look forward to giving you something that can bring you joy.
